Do’s and Don’ts with clay / terracotta water pot, water jug, water bottle

Clay / Terracotta water pots have been used for centuries as a natural way to cool and filter drinking water. Here are some of the do and don’ts to keep in mind when using and caring for clay / terracotta water pots.

Do’s:

  • Soak in water for 18-24 hours before first use for seasoning.
  • Clean with a Coconut (or) gentle scrubber and water before use.
  • Fill water and let it sit for a few hours before drinking to get cool water.
  • Store in a cool, dry place to prevent mold growth.
  • Handle with care.

Don’ts:

  • Don't use soap or detergent to clean.
  • Don't use a metal scrubber to clean.
  • Don't store acidic or citrus-based liquids in the clay pot it affects the taste of water.
  • Don't heat.
  • Don’t store hot water in it.
  • Don't stack pots on top of each other, as they can scratch or crack.
  • Don’t allow to freeze when filled with water.

Reason for leakage:

Clay water pots are porous by nature and designed to allow water to seep through the walls of the pot, which helps to keep the water cool and fresh. However, if the pot is cracked or damaged, it can lead to leakage.

Reason for white mold formation:

The clay material that these pots are made from is porous and actually breathes. It allows the natural salt and minerals from our water, to seep through the outside causing a white powdery build up on the outsides of the pot. This residue is not harmful and it can easily be removed with dry clean cloth.

Here are some tips to prevent mold formation on clay water pots:

  • Clean the pot regularly
  • Dry the pot completely
  • Change the water frequently
  • Store the pot in a cool, shaded place

Note:

Seasoning is must for clay drinkwares.
